“I’ve never seen Skepta look so soft” is some feedback I got on this painting.

Grime musicians receive a lot of criticism from looking intimidating to promoting violence. Even well known artists are censored or put down for the way they dress, although music is a creative and positive outlet to express themselves. “A bunch of young men all dressed in black dancing extremely aggressively on stage, it made me feel so intimidated, and it's just not what I expect to see on primetime TV.” - this is a complaint Skepta got for his BRIT awards 2015 performance.
It’s got to a point now where some music videos have been taken down for this reason.

This painting of Skepta was an experiment to see how it would be if bright colours, and stereotypically “feminine” things such as flowers were normalised in the Grime scene. Does taking away wearing all black, a hoodie, tracksuits, ‘extremely aggressive dancing’ and any ‘intimidating’ estate buildings in the background make a black man making a living off what he loves any less threatening to those that complain?
